Kitten Training – A Furry Friend for Life!

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Training a kitten to understand your words, do tricks and to know what to do where and when is actually quite simple but very essential for cat grooming and kitten care.

A cat owner should never yell or fuss the kitten, as kittens are babies and need to feel loved in much the same way as human babies. Spoil them, as this is how you bond and create a best friend lap cat for years to come. Listed below are some of the practices that will help you be not just a better trainer but also a much better keeper to cats.

  • At the beginning, hold, stroke and talk to the kitten, which helps the kitten to socialize with you and creates a firm bond. If the kitten tries to jump down or get away from you when you hold him or her, let them, and try again when they are comfortable. Do this as much as possible while the kitten is young, and he or she will get used to you doing it.
  • Always make sure the kitten knows where things are! If it’s a new scratching post, show the kitten where this is and encourage the kitten to use it. Do this over and over, and eventually the kitten will do it by itself! Show the kitten where to eat and where to go to the toilet, and make sure that the kitten will not be restricted from doing these things when the time comes!
  • Supervise and help your Persian kitten as it discovers it’s home, provide toys, and good food (not a superstore’s own brand!) when it’s needed! One litter box per cat is a good rule of thumb, and keep this clean by washing it out once a week.
  • Kittens and Persian kittens, especially males, need plenty of water, and this is best given in a glass bowl, as plastic corrodes and has been known to cause mouth ulcers and other nasty conditions particularly in Persians cats.
